Creating a reusable list with images add to products

Hi there

I would like to create a large list of ingredients with images  - this list does not need to be used in searches or filtering.

When I create a new product I would want to multi select ingredients   -  I would set this up in a custom tab to show on my product .

My products would all use combinations of these ingredients.

Can I achieve this using attributes?

I am new to Magento and would greatly appreciate anyone pointing me in the right direction or any advice on how to achieve this.
