Shipping Configuration Origins

I am new to Magento and I am trying to figure out how I assign different origin shipping addresses by a custom "vendor" attribute.

Our company often times dropships products so being able to configure shipping origin is an absolute must.

For instance one screw may come from California, why another comes from Ohio, why we also have stock in Boston.

Magento 2 has shipping rules but from what I'm seeing these rules only apply to to shipping destination not origin. Does anyone here have any suggestions whether by extension or out of the box where I can assign different shipping origins. 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right now Magento works as you described (basically).

There is a project under way called Magento MSI that will allow Multi-Source Inventory: https://github.com/magento-engcom/msi/wiki
