Is it possible to achieve a 90+ site speed with Magento 2?

SOLVED

Is it possible to achieve a 90+ site speed with Magento 2?

I have been running a medium-sized Magento 2 store for two years. We run nginx, varnish, CDN, minified css/js, all the basics. Our Google Page Speed metric has always been around 50-70 for desktop, and 30-50 for mobile.

My competitors using Shopify and Bigcommerce are scoring in the 90s for desktop, and 80s for mobile. Their sites are noticeably faster.

I know we can do some more optimization on our site, and I am sure everyone has some recommendations - but I have been searching for another site to even look to as a reference, to prove that it can be done. I cannot find a single store running magento 2 that scores in the 90s with Google Page Speed. So my question is:

Does anyone know of any examples of a Magento 2 store with a 90+ Page Speed rating?

Hi Paul,

It's not just you!  Here's another recent thread here on the forums:

and here are some posts on Reddit:

I hadn't joined the conversation, but I've been following it. I'm yet to find anyone on Magento 2 with a high ranking Google Mobile Pagespeed score. I have seen some fast M2 sites, but they score poorly with Google's tool, so I question how meaningful the results are. I'm waiting to see how new sites that use PWA rank. Perhaps that will tip the scales.

@pauljmccainIt is possible to get 90 or above score for desktop version. For Mobile it can take good amount of effort.

Look at jcb.com, newcakes.nl and can be found couple more. We also need to consider that how much traffic they would be having and they are global sites.

Conclusion is what you are looking for is possible but would depend on how much time and money you want to spend to achieve the same.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions.

jcb.com scores ~25 mobile, 80 desktop

https://www.cakesupplies.nl scores ~25 mobile, 40 desktop

I understand it should be possible, and it is based on resources. But there are many large companies using magento 2, and all the sites are slow. I am sure the budget is not the problem for them. There no real-life examples of a real, live website scoring over 90 on page speed, so I can only conclude that it is practically impossible on this platform.

I am still looking for any real life examples of a fast Magento 2 website. Maybe there is a good website that exists, but I have not found any real-world examples.

Re: Is it possible to achieve a 90+ site speed with Magento 2?

Definitely yes,but it depends on technical characteristics also. If it is possible for you, you can conduct code audit and then to have success in this achievement.

Thus, we should always consider optimizing the program code using specialized utilities wherever possible.

I can recommend you to use Google Pay Speed Optimization.

Re: Is it possible to achieve a 90+ site speed with Magento 2?

@pauljmccainNot sure why the score came so low for you. When I saw it was 90 for JCB and 89 for other website. However, it is definitely achievable, depending on how much time and money you want to spend.

@Robert Rand

Thanks! I am glad I'm not the only person looking for a real-world example.

I've found a few default/demo sites that can hit high 90s as well, but of course there's always more scripts and data in a live site.

It's pretty disappointing that it's so challenging to reach a high score with this platform. I guess I'll keep searching for any real example, and in the meantime, I'll try our best to optimize. I guess it'll be quite an achievement for the first person who can prove that a high score can be accomplished!
