Magento 2 theme vs custom build

Hello, we are in the process of migrating from Magento 1 to Magento 2. Due to a limited budget, our agency has suggested that we go with a theme instead of a custom build.

This has raised some questions - if we choose a theme such as:

1. http://m2.alothemes.com/gecko/english_9/

and the developer stops updating the theme, sending security updates etc, will we be at risk?

I have no development experience so hoping someone can advise!
