Load catalog products from external API

Hey guys,

I have a client with lots of physical stores, and a system that his managers uses to manage the products they sell, like prices, descriptions, etc.

He wants a Magento website to  start selling his products online, they already have an API that provides all the products available, that  they  already use on the local POS systems.

My question is: Is that possible to make the Magento (v2) website load  their products catalog from an external API  without breaking everything  else?

I  know that is not a straight forward thing to do, but  I'm wondering if is that even possible to do.

That is an interesting question. 

Even if you manage to make it work the performance would be very poor. Plus how would you manage indexing?

I suggest you just load product data in Magento 2.
