Backorders while "In Stock"

My client is requesting that they be able to do backorders using a negative quantity, instead of changing stock status to "Out of Stock"...

There are a number of extensions, but none of them seem to key off of quantity, instead they only work if the product "Out of Stock" or is set to "Backorder" (or Pre-Order)... This would be fine if it was only a few products and we had someone to manually update our site daily... but we are integrated with an inventory management system that sends price and qty data over via cron. 

We want to be able to set the product to "backorder" status (on Product Detail, Cart/Checkout and Admin Order details) but have it activate when our quantity is less than 1. 

Is anyone aware of an extension that could do this?

I have used amasty preorder module and it works fine. It will add negative quantity to the product and product should be instock to apply preorder.

We tried the Amasty extension, and it crashed our checkout process. We lost a day worth of sales because for some reason when we enabled their extension, it would not process credit cards. Disable the extension, everything was good. 

Support tried their best to get it to work, but for some reason, they never were able. We ended up getting a refund.
