Error While Installing Extensions

I'm trying to install an extension (Mailchimp in this case) and it's going through readiness check absolutely fine and then when I get to Step 2: Create Backup it completes

Disk space available - Yes

Store in maintenance mode - Yes

Backup failed - Error received from server:

I've read up on this document

And I'm assuming it's a file permissions issue.  I'm on a shared host which I think is the problem?  Does this sound like that could be it?

I've just tested with selecting the DB only for the backup and that was fine, it was just the Code and Media.

Thank you. I don't think it did anything. It always gets stuck with the

"Update is already in progress" messages on repeat...

I followed some online suggestions to remove the maintenance.flag and update_in_progress.flag files in the /var folder in root which released it and the maintenance mode was turned off and I could access the public site again and log back into admin but it just hasn't done anything.
