Extension Manager not able to complete backup successfully

Hi all, I'm trying to use the Extension Manager to install an extension. 

There is a step in the process to create a backup of the website before the extension can be installed. The pre-requisite checks all passed successfully, however the backup creation fails with no error message:

I checked error_log , var/log/debug.log, var/log/system.log , but there are no errors at all. 

Does anyone have an idea on how I can troubleshoot this ? Thanks!

Extension Manager checklist

Before you continue, to avoid errors during your installation or update, make sure you verify all of the following:

• You set up a Magento file system owner and shared that owner’s group with the web server user group
• Your cron jobs are set up and running
• Set a value for DATA_CONVERTER_BATCH_SIZE
• File system permissions are set properly
