Similar issues have already been reported for Magento 1.9.
With a directly triggered order confirmation email, the total block is missing completely:
Articles | Qté | Prix |
Produit Test | 1 | TVA excl.: 34,00 CHF |
| | | TVA incl.: 36,72 CHF |
If the order confirmation is resent from "sales/orders/Send Email" again, the total will be displayed correctly:

Produit Test | 1 | TVA excl.: 34,00 CHF |
| | | TVA incl.: 36,72 CHF |
Sous-total (TVA excl.) | | 34,00 CHF |
Sous-total (TVA incl.) | | 36,72 CHF |

The problem also occurs with the original mail template. Where can I start debugging?
