How long should it take. i m already 40 min in.

Do not stop this. Parallel you can try with composer in other setup using command line:

still running update in progress after 80 min
it did work on the second go via cli after updating composer.phar

This did not work for me at all. IN fact after doing the CLI stuff my entire website is 404. yay, staying at work late again.
