Scenario:
A customer purchases a product and we ship it. They then see a price lower and would like us to price match.
Solutions/Issues:
Solution 1. We can do a credit memo with an adjustment refund for the difference.
Issue: Magento does not account for the decrease in actual sales and taxes associated with the lower price.
Solution 2: We can do a refund on the item (not return to stock) and charge an adjustment fee to make the price lower.
Issue: While the Grand total (excluding tax is correct) Magento refunds the total tax amount making the Grand total (including tax) wrong.
Am I approaching this work flow wrong?
Is there an easy way to do this (for both me and my customers) that will calculate/report tax correctly?
Thanks!
Al
You're on the right track, but Magento’s default options make it tricky to adjust prices after invoicing without messing up tax calculations.
Solution 1: Credit Memo
- Issue: Magento doesn’t adjust the original sales or taxes, so you’d need to manually correct your tax reports.
Solution 2: Refund with Adjustment Fee
- Issue: This refunds the total tax, which can misrepresent the actual amount the customer should be paying.
Better Options:
- Custom Discount: Offer a discount for future purchases instead of adjusting the current invoice. It keeps your records clean.
- Third-Party Extensions: Consider using extensions designed to handle price adjustments and tax recalculations accurately.
Overall, a custom solution or extension might be your best bet to keep both you and your customers happy.

Hi jesterlsd,
Your scenario raises some valid points regarding price adjustments after invoicing in Magento. Here are a few thoughts on your approach and some potential solutions:
1. Credit Memo Adjustment:
Your first solution of issuing a credit memo for the price difference is a common practice, but as you noted, it can complicate sales and tax reporting. One workaround could be to document the adjustment clearly in your records, but it may not resolve the tax calculation issue.
2. Refund with Adjustment Fee:
Your second solution is creative, but the tax calculation discrepancies can indeed lead to confusion for both you and your customers.
Alternative Suggestions:
Custom Extension: Consider developing or using a third-party extension that handles price adjustments while accurately reflecting tax changes. This could simplify the workflow and ensure compliance with tax regulations.
Manual Adjustments: If feasible, you might temporarily handle these cases manually until a more robust solution is implemented. This way, you can ensure accurate reporting while you explore options check capital plus auditing
Consult with a Developer: It may be worth consulting with a Magento developer who can provide insights specific to your setup and suggest tailored solutions that maintain accurate reporting.
