Create a production BOM

Create a production BOM

A production BOM consists of one BOM header and one or more BOM lines. You can create, copy, change, and if they’re no longer used, delete production BOMs. Production BOMs can also have different statuses that determine how they're used.

Occasionally, production BOMs will change over time, usually because of changes that have been made to their components. You can make these changes directly to a production BOM, or you can create different versions of the BOM.

Because a BOM can have different versions, and because multiple BOMs can use its components, Business Central provides many features to help you track component usage at the BOM, BOM version, and BOM component levels.

To create a production BOM, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Search for page icon in the upper-right corner of the page, enter Production BOMs, and then select the related link.

  2. Select New.

The BOM header includes the following fields:

  • No. - Specifies the unique identifier of a BOM. In a company where a one-to-one (1:1) relationship exists between an item and a production BOM, the production BOM number typically equals the item number.

  • Description - Specifies a description for the production BOM. Similar to the production BOM number, if a 1:1 relationship exists between an item and a production BOM, then the production BOM description typically equals the item description.

  • Unit of Measure - Specifies the unit of measure for the BOM, which can be different from the base unit of measure from the produced item. For example, the base unit of measure from a produced item is PCS, while the item is produced in sets, which means that the unit of measure code on the BOM is SET. On the BOM lines, you can enter the quantities to produce a set. During the production process, if you decide to use other units of measure, such as PCS, then the system will automatically recalculate the quantities of the components. Before you can link a production BOM to an item, you’ll need to set up this unit of measure in the Item Units of Measure page for the item.

  • Status - Specifies the status of a production BOM. The options are as follows:

    • New - The status is automatically set to New when you create a new BOM. The BOM is editable.

    • Certified - You can use a certified BOM in production planning and production orders. An error message will display if you try to use a non-certified BOM. A certified BOM isn't editable.

    • Under Development - Indicates that a certified BOM is undergoing edits. A BOM with this status isn't used in the cost rollup for the item. Cost isn't calculated with this status.

    • Closed - Indicates that the BOM is no longer used. This status is similar to the Blocked option that is used elsewhere in Business Central. A BOM with this status isn't used in the cost rollup for the item.
