Glad to know that you are building a demo site to learn the platform ! Magento natives comes up with the bunch of out of the box functionality so you can explore that as well and then try to learn customization as well.

For rest of the information you can follow the guideline shared by @Vimal Kumar  which gives you more idea to understand the platform and you can always post your queries on this forum in respected section.
