Hello,
We are looking to upgrade our two Magento 2 sites (2.4.2 and 2.4.1 currently). How difficult is this to do?
We do not currently have any web developers or in house IT specialists. Has anybody done updates recently. Did you do them yourself or is it better to have an external web developing company to do it.
Does anybody have any recommendations of who to use and what should we expect to pay?
Apologies for all the questions, I am new to this and any help will be greatly appreciated.
You can not upgrade Magento 2 without significant experience and programming knowledge.
Since you are running 2.4.2 and 2.4.1, you are most likely using php 7.4.
You will also need to upgrade to php 8.2 which is a major version upgrade.
Depending on how much custom code and extensions you have, the upgrade together with testing will probably take hundreds of hours for someone who knows what they're doing.
Or like a few hours for someone who has no idea what they're doing and everything will be broken.
Hello,
Great answer, thank you very much!
Upgrading Magento 2 sites, particularly from versions like 2.4.1 or 2.4.2 to the latest version, involves several steps. While the process isn't overly complex, it does require attention to detail and careful execution.
Here's a simplified guide:
1. Backup: Always back up your databases and files before initiating an upgrade.
2. Review Magento's Official Documentation: Follow the upgrade guides provided by Magento for specific versions. They outline necessary steps, prerequisites, and precautions.
3. Extension and Theme Compatibility: Check if your current extensions and themes are compatible with the new Magento version. Update or replace any incompatible ones.
4. Staging Environment: Perform the upgrade in a staging environment first to test functionality and ensure a smooth transition without impacting the live site.
5. Upgrade Steps: Generally, the upgrade involves steps such as disabling cache, putting the site in maintenance mode, upgrading using Composer, running necessary commands for database upgrades, and re-enabling cache.
6. Testing: Thoroughly test the upgraded site for any bugs, errors, or compatibility issues. Test functionalities, checkout processes, extensions, and customizations.
7. Go Live: Once you're confident in the staging environment, apply the upgrade to the live site.
8. Post-Upgrade Checks: Monitor the site after going live to ensure everything is functioning correctly. Address any post-upgrade issues promptly.
