When you have enough product (you certainly do) , it's usually good idea to turn off "Update on Save" option and use manual indexing. For example I usually use cron to run indexing scrip every night. You can find command line indexing script from shell folder. Easiest way to run it is php -f shell/indexer.php reindexall (this will reindex everything, if you want to be more specific you can play around with options this script has).

I suggest that you check first var/log/system.log and/or var/log/exception.log as there's probably more information about what's going on. It looks like Magento crashes at some point.

Since we know absolutely nothing about your web site, I'm shooting from the hip: do you use Full Page Cache (FPC)? This is probably the simplest way to increase site speed by an order of magnitude.

Are you sure you haven't overloaded any core object using local code pool (app/code/local/Mage/ )? This is what usually causes such behavior.

I have no problem with making image files "group" writable (for example my current preferred hosting provider runs PHP with group privileges so it's more or less necessary), but I definitely question the wisdom of making them writable for "others". Why not 664 / 775?

While ideally you should, it's not always possible as upgrades also incorporate all kind of other stuff. It's especially hard when you need to upgrade from ancient versions (such as CE 1.6). Enter patches -- quick hot-fixes that address just a bug and nothing else. Patches can also be applied to older versions and they're relatively safe. So apply patches as soon as they're released, but also consider upgrading.

Also, 1.9.2.3 is already an old hat. There's new Magento in down (1.9.2.4) which by the way fixes couple of major problems caused by earlier patch level update (such as PHP 5.3 is supported yet again and uploaded image files are available for "others". Again.).

Magento orders already has comments functionality right out of box. You can add comments for yourself or you can share them with the customer. Look bottom-left corner of any order; it has Comment History there.

Well, Magento doesn't send an e-mail when there's no user info in database and for a very good reason: otherwise it's very simple to generate thousands of fake password reminders. It a) spams recipients and b) may cost real money for the store. In worst case scenario it may get store blacklisted because spamming.

Actually this is it, chmod is command, -r means recursive and go-rwx means remove all privileges from group and others. However I'm not sure what you want to achieve as 600/700 means that you're planning to establish a rather draconic permission scheme.

These tables you referenced are not Magento tables. Apparently there's an issue with ERP integration -- the system is trying to create duplicate records to a table with unique constraint. This might be because bad recovery, bug in extension of because somebody messed around in databases or because MySQL error. You're guess is as good as mine.

I don't know what are your business requirements for switching last two steps, but I'd like to point out that they are like they are for reason. There are Shopping Cart rules that are based on payment method chosen, such as surcharges. Basically it means that price may change after review.

I strongly recommend that you make yourself familiar with software versioning, especially tool called git. There're several git services (such as github and bitbucket) that provide infrastructure. Use that for deployment and your benefits are twofold -- a) you save yourself from world of hurt and b) you doesn't sound like somebody from stone age.

How about using chmod -R go-rwx * instead? It recursively removes all privileges from group and others. And it should be WAY faster.

1. I use PhpStorm. It's fast enough for me (MacBook here as well). It's probably most well regarded IDE among Magento developers, although some people prefer NetBeans. Mostly because it's free. 2. I run my development environment locally on my machine. Pretty much everyone and their dog do it, in case you're wondering. 3. Xdebug. Simply because it works. I'm open for suggestions here however. 4. Nope. :)

By default Magento logging is turned off. Go to "System" > "Advanced | "Developer" > "Log Settings" and enable logging first. Magento logs contain all kind of important and useful stuff. Consult with them before you do anything else.

Good way to speed up your CE store is to use one or another Full Page Cache (FPC) and we're talking about orders of magnitudes here. Of course, Varnish is even better, but this is stuff for very competent people who actually know what they're doing. There's number of those from different vendors available, so pick your own poison based on your personal preferences.

If xCart passwords are encrypted (they should be), then your only option is to extend Magento password validation object so that it supports xCart password encryption approach. Or find some kind of workaround, such as forced password change (send automatic password reminders to everyone). This is actually even better than mucking around with authorisation algorithms.

var/log/system.log and var/log/exception.log (if exists) files should give you pretty good idea what's going on. Also did you flush caches and reindex database?
