HI @frantic_lady,
I second that - they could still be magenta heroes / wizards without the official certification, but many devs have them, as a sign of proof of their knowledge.
I also mean that is it optional to have ones names one the magento homepage - but not sure about this.
You can always ask a company for references / reference-work, if they have done good jobs in the past, I think that they gladly will give references.
hi @frantic_lady,
This is the official page for certified magento people:
https://www.magentocommerce.com/certification/directory/
Hi Kent,
thank you very much. I have checked Pagehero and Limit International and web-helden.de, but I couldn't found any of those names in the register.
that means their are no experts.

but I want to be correct: They say our employees are certified Magento developers. So that could be right, but nobody can proof it without a name.
so your suggestion to check projects they did in the past is the best to proof a company.
hi @frantic_lady,
Yes... Ask the company or developer for reference before you are doing business with them..
Maybe they have these on their website, then simply call / mail the reference customers and ask for their opinion with the company, because you wish to cooperate with them, and would like the best there is, and therefor your will be asking the reference company for their opinion on the company and their work.
Also ask for thing "that could be better" to help you in your decision
