Difference between paypal pro on magento 1.9 vs 2.1

It seems that Magento 2 uses the paypal payflo gateway to handle paypal pro payments whereas 1.9 just communicates directly with paypal pro. 

I'm just wondering since I'm not really used to the payflo gateway or manager interface. I really liked the integration that 1.9 had... 2.1 has caused me a lot of grief.
