Is it possible to upgrade from Magento 1.6.1 to 2.0 with the new release available?
What action would you recommend me?

It is not possible to upgrade a Magento store from 1.x to 2, but it is possible to migrate the store's data: https://github.com/magento/data-migration-tool-ce
To upgrade your Magento 1.6 to version 2.0, I think you have to transfer all data from magento 1.6 to new store. Check out this tool to help you do it easily https://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/magento-to-magento-migration-tool.html
