I have a big problem. We are using an old version of Magento, 1.4.1.1, and we need to upgrade to a newer version now. The problem is that I cannot do this because I get an error message. I have no idea how to fix the problem. Any attempt to run pear with standard commands will result in errors, i.e. pear version or others.
When I use the following command via SSH ($ /bin/bash pear mage-setup ) on the server, I get the message every time:

When I try to run the setup for the update with "$ ./pear magesSetup" I get
bash: ./pear: Permission denied
The host of the webshop told me to use the command "$ /bin/bash pear mage-setup". It starts then, but ends with the error message (see above).
Can someone explain to me what the reason for this problem is?
