How do I get a column in the main menu?

We have about 50 categories. When you hover over the product dropdown it is a single column which goes off the page. How do I make it so there is a break and it shows multiple columns?

You can do using custom css.

I have an extension that will do it. In looking at it though the only functionality I need from the extension is the additional columns, I can do everything else in Magento. If I can get rid of an extension and have one less thing to manage that would be great.
