SMTP configuration for 2.0

hello,

I am trying to get email to work with a new Magento 2.0 installation on a bitnami stack using AWS. I am trying to follow these instructions https://community.bitnami.com/t/configuring-email-server-manually-bitnami-magento-stack-2-0-2-2/4037...

However I am unable to get any messages to forward through to an outside gmail account. I cannot find any information relating to this on any other forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
