Terms and conditions "applied" field

In ver 2.2.5, there is a field "Applied", with a choice between "Manually" and "Automatically" in the definition of Terms and Conditions. The user guide does not document this field ( https://docs.magento.com/m2/ce/user_guide/stores/terms-and-conditions.html?Highlight=terms%20and%20c... )

So, what is the purpose of this choice? What does "Automatically" do exactly, and on what basis?

Manually Means Customer/user need to manually select checkbox terms and condition before place order.

Automatically means Checkbox is not displaying in payment page and the only link to terms and conditions will be displayed.
