Administrator user custom field

I'm hoping someone can point me to an example / documentation on this topic as I'm having trouble searching for it (everything comes up with customer fields).

I need to add a text field to each administrator user record so that I can store a comma separated list of numbers in there.  I also need to be able to reference that value in an observer.
