I want to know if anyone has tried this, what were the issues you faced? What were you pain point and quick wins and disadvantages and do you have any advice to give us from your experience.

Hello,
You cannot reuse all theme files and extensions. You can just export and import the data (catalog, orders) into M2. My recommendation: rebuild your site on a dev server. And then you can import your data from there.
