Checkout won't process Braintree credit card or redirect to Paypal

I'm running Magento 2.3.3 with Braintree enabled along with PayPal.  When I go to process a credit card payment with Braintree and hit submit I get a Use other form of payment error.  If I choose to use Paypal instead, a popup breifly shows wanting to redirect to PayPal but then disappears.  Error log does show:

main.INFO: Consumer "async.operations.all" skipped as required connection "amqp" is not configured. Unknown connection name amqp [] []

but I'm not sure if this is the issue.  Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!
