Cloud server or VPS and specifications

Hi,

I'm looking for recommendations on a suitable solution for a Magento 2 website.

It would have approx. 30.000 individual products with around 500 - 1000 visits per day.

Is it best to go for Cloud or VPS servers (and why?) and what CPU / RAM would be recommended?

Hi there,

Cloud is the future so there is no point to use old virtualization technology.

For a store like that, I would start with 4vCPU/4GB RAM compute engine and 2vCPU,7.5GB RAM cloud MySQL instance (at least this is how we call those in Google Cloud).

You can try 2vCPU/2GB RAM web server first or try a single server configuration but hardware is so cheap nowadays, there is no point in saving a few bucks per month while decreasing the store conversion because it's slower than it can be, plus your staff will be much happier with a faster admin (it does not use cache so better infrastructure is even more critical for admin users). And with Google Cloud you will get recommendations every few weeks to increase or decrease your specs according to the load on the servers - so you are not wasting money on a larger server if you do not need it.

To clarify, a Cloud Server is usually just a VPS server with varying level of underlying architecture. Some Cloud Servers are basically just VPS rebranded as "Cloud" while there are also those who have real High Availability and redundancy built-in.

Do you already have an existing Magento 1 / Magento 2 store or are you just starting out?

We already have a Magento 1 website hosted on a VPS but we will be redesigning a new one rather than migrating.

Currently we're with 1&1 on a cheapish VPS with 4 core CPU and 8Gb RAM but we aren't happy with the performance hence trying to make sure we get something better bearing the cost in mind.

With the size of the database I assume we need more RAM but not sure just how much hence why I'm asking to get an idea and why we're thinking a Cloud server where we can up the RAM gradually to the right level if it's not enough.

It may not be ideal but we'd rather use one package rather than split the database and the admin side on separate ones.

Also interested in the claim of "Magento Optimised" servers as opposed to other with the CPU and RAM power but not specifically optimised, and what that entails.

You should definitely go with something that is easily scalable so you can scale up whenever you need to.

While CPU and RAM is important, the software level tuning and optimization is also very important as that'll make all the difference in terms of performance of your Magento 2 store. A badly tuned highly specs server can perform worse than a well tuned lower specs server.
